About the Edition

The Popular Arts in America: A History of Punk Rock examines the roots, development, and significance of punk rock music in American popular culture. It covers the origins of punk in England and the United States in the 1960s, the development of punk in London and New York in the early 1970s, the rise of post-punk in England and hardcore in America in the late 1970s, and the evolution of post-punk to alternative rock and “pop punk” in the 1980s and ’90s. The thrust of the book is sociological and cultural rather than musicological and will trace the development of punk rock in an historical context. The intent of the book is to provide a comprehensive overview of the now more than thirty-year development of punk rock in the United States and Great Britain, the significance of major artists in that development, the role played by punk rock in shaping our musical and cultural sensibilities, and the importance of punk in our social and cultural history.
